BELGRADE, July 09 (Serbia Today) – Whether you want to travel back in time or follow the footsteps of a war criminal, speak with dead or drink wine with Old Romans, search for truffles or milk a cow – you can do all you want with Serbian tour agencies that recently started competing in offering as strange as possible tours.
A group of smiling people are listening to Yugoslav communist leader Josip Broz Tito telling jokes with a Cuban cigar in his hand, while waiters with white gloves on are serving cocktails. Lobster and caviar are waiting on the table at the luxury mahogany dining car, while a sparkling royal-blue train is heading west.
It is not a scene from an old time nostalgic movie on socialist times when Yugoslavia was still spreading allover the Balkans and Tito’s Blue Train was crossing the country serving the hedonistic needs of the late dictator and his royal guests; it is a part of a tour offered by a Belgrade agency. Only Tito was not genuine, performed by an actor. But a singer entertaining guests, Miki Jevremovic, was the same that sung for the Marshal in 1970’s and a tour guide was the same one who toured Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe during his visit.
“With this tour Belgrade’s Grand Casino won against Las Vegas to host a recent gathering of the managers from around the world,” Tanja Bogdanov, the Vector Tour agency’s director, told Serbia Today. “Big international corporations that have opened offices in Belgrade are the main customers for such tours as part of their retreat and team building programs.”
The offer includes various types of pleasure, from Gastro Safari and Legend Hunt Game to Adrenalin Park and “Run with Partisans to catch your dinner”.
Those who find cooking more appealing and relaxing, and have never had the opportunity to go the whole process of getting food on the table, can spend a day or two in a village, trying to accomplish a given task to prepare some of the Serbian traditional foods, but have to do all by themselves: for “gibanica”, a cheese pie, they have to milk a cow, make thin layers of dough and take eggs from a chicken coop; for apple pie to get apples from a tree and if they need potatoes, they have to take them from the ground.
“Tourism has to change. All contents get boring in a while,” Bogdanovic says.
Last year, when war crimes indictee, Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic was caught in Belgrade after six years of hiding as an alternative medicine practitioner in Belgrade, the same agency has organized a tour that followed the footsteps of Dr. Dabic.
In a battle for customers, traditional white magic of east Serbia’s Vlachs has found also a place on a tourist menu of an agency.
“Some people are ready to pay 4,000 euros for a trip to Cuba to be cured by a sorcerer. And we have it right here, in eastern Serbia. Vlachs’ white magic is considered to be one of the strongest in the world,” says Radmilo Bumber, head of Pan Europa Adriatic agency.
Old believes, customs and superstitions are still very alive in villages close to the Romanian border, inhabited by Vlachs or Wallachians, Romanized people from south-east Europe, descendants of Roman colonists or Thracians, Illyrians and Greeks. There is still a fear among some of them that wives and lovers can “tie them up”, put spells on them and ruin their lives. For hundreds of years, fortune-tellers are helping them out by taking spells off and giving advices on how to deal with problems on the basis of what cards or beans might say.
In a day or two tour guests are taken along the Old Roman roads, through the underground world to the spot where Roman legionnaires had crossed the Danube river, and down to the town of Negotin and surrounding villages, where they have 10 minutes with the White Magus or one of the fortune tellers. A male secretary is opening a door escorting a visitor to a no-smoking room where a woman behind a table with cards spread over it seams to know all about him.
“What is happening there is just between two of them,” Bumber said.
But those more hedonistic than concerned about their fate would rather enjoy the taste of wine or truffle. According to the legend presented by the agency, when gods had become tired of creating the world, they agreed to make for themselves a strange growth, of a strange form and smell, but of divine taste, as well as a drink to go with it to recover their strength. They created truffles and wine. Now, the tourists might join gods in searching for truffles with a guide and specially trained dogs.
One of the loveliest unusual one-day trips is organized by Serbia’s Railroads – travel to different towns on the Romantic Train, preserved as it was in the beginning of 20th century with little outside balconies between old train cars and pulled by steam locomotive built in 1917.

The Fifth International Workshop "Zlakusa 2009"

Uzice, July 08, (Serbia Today) -If we drive from the capital of Serbia, along the interstate highway with the aim to visit the mountain Zlatibor, after 185 km along the main road, half way between Pozega and Uzice, on the right corner of the river Djetinja, you’ll see a village that is famous for its tradition of pottery and ceramic making.
It is the village Zlakusa, where 17 families are making living by producing pottery and ceramics and thanks to them, two International Art Workshops will take place here this Summer. The First Art Workshop already took place from June 25-July 5, 2009. In order to introduce you to the Second one, which will take place from August 15-25, we will describe to you the First one.
The opening of the First international ceramics Art Camp, namely, ceramics workshop, happened on Thursday, June 25. Among the guests (which were over 100) the opening was attended by the officials from the government and the town of Uzice and Pozega, as well as the sponsors of the international workshop.
Already the next day the participants took their positions and created new works of art, which will be found on exhibitions throughout Serbia and the world.
Balsa Raicevic (Serbia), Ozgundogdu Dogan (Turkey), Dragoslav Krnajski (Serbia), Evgenija Portoj Kostic (Serbia), Fejza Ozgundogdu (Turkey), Khaled Sirag (Egypt), Milovan Dagovic (Serbia), Radenko Adnadj (Serbia), Ute Hatwig Schulz (Germany) and Vitauskas Paskauskas (Lithuania), enjoyed in the free expression of their art in Zlakusa, until July 4.th, when some of the works were baked on an open fire or in modern furnaces, depending on the wishes of the artists.
The friendship they developed was not only evident through the Arts and the visions expressed in their works, but also through different entertainment events which they organized together. The Association of Potters of Zlakusa and the host Milojko Nikitovic, provided the housing and food for these artists.
“The aim and purpose of the Art camp is to maintain this tradition, enable the mingling with the artists. Our goal is to get more funds in order to realize this event on a higher level. On this occasion, I thank Ninko Tesic, the Director of Impol Seval a.d. on given support, all the sponsors, as well as the support of the town of Pozega. Thanks to them, the Fifth Art Camp was the best so far- which was not just our opinion from the Association, but also according to the participants and all those who were present here in the Art Camp.''- Milojko Nikitovic, The Art Camp host said for Serbia Today.

Blueberry Fest in Jelova Gora

Uzice, July 14, (Serbia Today)- With the ambition to promote blueberry growing and to help protect the nature of Jelova Gora, every year in July an ecological-promotional manifestation “Days of blueberries” is held.
This Sixth traditional manifestation started on July 9, 2009. Sponsors were the town of Uzice, Insurance company “Ere”, “Uzice gas”, Regional Chamber of Commerce, Eco Fund, Serbia forest, EPS, Ist Point Sevojno and NIKE, while contributors were: the Photo Star, Alfa TV, TV 5, Lav TV, S-star, San Radio, Radio Uzice, Luna Radio and Radio 31.
Blueberries, called “blue gold”, have a special significance, because of their exceptional quality, and, among other things, high anti-cancerogenic property.
A representative and host of the manifestation, Mr. Slobodan Poznanović told Serbia Today about the importance of blueberries and how they are harvested: “This year we went with the eco-patrol, where we attended every day the picking of blueberries, and we have already had an impact on conscienceless pickers. That is, conscientious pickers finger pick the blueberries and can harvest daily 4-5 kilograms, while conscienceless pickers, which pick by combing and destroy this way lot of blueberries, can gather up to 30 kilograms. Blueberries are very healthy and during the season we can harvest about 9 tons.''
Of course, this event was accompanied by entertainment, which included the soccer and basketball match, music and folkloric performances, and the “Miss Blueberry” pageant. This year’s Pageant Winner is Mirela Kremic from Gostinica. The second place went to Marijana Milojevic, from the same village, and the third to Andelka Nestorovic, from Uzice. All three winners received as an award, a weekend at Zlatar’s lake.
With the desire and hope that next year the weather will serve us better, the event was completed about 8 PM with the famous national dish – bean soup. Jelova Gora is densely forested corrugated plateau situated twelve kilometers northwest from Uzice.

A new Generation of Serbia Politicians

Backi Monostor, July 08, ( Serbia Today) - The Fourth summer school of social democracy has been finished today, in Backi Monostor. During past seven days, 60 participants, youngsters from Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina had opportunity to learn about social-democratic ideas and skills as well as how to put newly acquired knowledge into practice.
This school is organized by Friedrich Ebert Foundation every year and one of their aims is to gather young activists from social-democratic parties, nongovernmental organizations and syndicates from ex-Yugoslavia territory. This project started in Grabov (Belarus) three years ago and general goal of this project is promoting social-democratic ideas.
Some of the subjects that students had opportunity to study were political ideologies, European Union, Church and government, global challenges of social democracy and alike. In daily workshops students applied team work, communication and conflicts, negotiations into practice. The main subject in this year’s summer camp was “Asset and skill of solidarity as crucial responses to existing crises”.
Lecturers were recognized public figures from Serbia - Nenad Canak, the president of Vojvodina’s Social-democratic League, Zarko Korac, the president of Social-democratic Union, Gordana Comic, vice president in Serbian Parliament, Dragoljub Micunovic, the president of Democratic Party’s Council and others.
Regarding relevance of this event, Nenad Canak said for Serbia Today “any regional gathering caries seed of good relations and that is way we should nourish it and take care of it.” According to his personal point of view, “the idea of social democracy is the only one that can bring peace and stability in this region”.
Gordana Comic said that importance of this camp lies in the fact that these young people are gaining adequate knowledge for the future. “The main problem in Serbia is lack of knowledge”, she said, “and it is situated in field where it mustn’t be such as political scene and other public jobs and public sectors”.
On the last day of Friedrich Ebert Foundation’s summer school, “Social democratic week 2009” participants received diplomas for “accomplishments and active participation in school’s work”.
This brings hope to Serbia that future generations will be more acquainted with political ideas, problems and their efficient solutions. On the other hand, regional based school promises better international relations in future and, therefore, stability in the region.

Free Books for First-graders
Belgrade, July 15, (Serbia Today) - All of the 80.000 first-graders starting the Elementary school in Fall will receive sets of free text books for the 1st grade. Elementary School Teachers ranked as best text books those published by “Zavod za izdavanje udzbenika”, “Kleti”, “Nasa skola”, and “Kreativni Centar” publishing companies. Several other publishing companies were licensed for text books publishing by the Ministry of Education as well, but their editions will be much smaller.
Deputy Minister Zoran Kostic told reporters that participating publishers accepted lower wholesale prices and promised to print about 5 percent more text books than needed, in case of the bigger demand.
Minister of Education Zarko Obradovic stated that he is happy with the overall performance of his Department in the past year. More than 127.000 people work in Education System in Serbia.
Education is one of the strategic questions for the Serbia Government, according to Obradovic, and they should approach to certain issues with utmost caution. When it comes to those working in the Education, lack of funds for the social programs for those who should be retired is certainly a sensitive problem.
The rational use of resources is another problem Obradovic mentioned. There is 185 cases in the Serbian schools when the class is consisting of only 1 to 5 pupils, he added.
Ministry of Education recently sent circular to all High Schools that they should not form classes with less than 15 pupils.

Punto MADE IN Kragujevac

Novi Sad, July 15 (Serbia Today) -The production of “Punto” diesel started this month in Kragujevac at “Zastava Auto” factory. More than a thousand workers are working in production of Punto cars. Most of the parts are being delivered from Italy by train, and workers are scheduled in two shifts, due to a large amount of production.
Giueseppe Zaccaria, spokesman of “Fiat-Cars Serbia” said that he is particularly satisfied with the production which reached one hundred cars per day, which was their initial goal based on the market demand.
Fiat also has its people here controlling the quality of each car unit and helping the workers master the technology. Fiat is in the final phase of clearing old “Zastava” production halls so that they can install the most modern technology in car production by the end of this year.
If everything goes according to the plan the factory in Kragujevac will take on technological supremacy from the “Fiat” factory in Poland. Model “Fiat 500” is being produced in Poland right now.
Minister of Economy and Regional development Mladjan Dinkic said that within two next months the annex to contract with Italians will be signed for manufacturing a new car model. It is not decided yet whether it will be a new model A or B class but whichever one they choose, its trial production will start at the end of next year. We are talking about two new models that have been designed and one of them is a small city vehicle, technically sophisticated and mainly for the sale in the EU market.
If Fiat decides to manufacture Class A in Kragujevac it would mean manufacturing 250.000 cars annually plus 50.000 of Punto diesel. But if they choose class B then it would mean 140.000 cars per year.
Minister Dinkic also said that the production of Punto on gas will begin in September. The Managers of Fiat will soon inform us on a further plan of production of Fiat Punto diesel that will be manufactured in two versions, one called Dynamic the other Emotion. They will also present the investment information concerning additional gear needed for those two models. Minister Dinkic said that the investment by Fiat and Serbia in this factory will be around 700 million euro.
Zastava is a Serbian brand but up to now the sales of Punto manufactured in Kragujevac topped 350million dinars. The total of 5000 cars was sold even before the production has started. Dinkic said that the production of Punto cars may be raised due to large demand and be sold according to a system “old for new”. The production is heavy and the workers will be awarded with a bonus that equals an average salary of 30.000dinars, and they will receive it in three equal monthly installments.
Director of the “Fiat-Cars Serbia” said that it is not known how much money will be invested in the future but that hiring people and installing new equipment is already a huge investment.

The Intimate, The Infinity and The Impossible

Belgrade, June 27 ( Serbia Today) - The Intimate, The Infinity and The Impossible is the title of the exhibition held in gallery Magacin , Kraljevica Marka 4, Belgrade, Serbia, 15 June - 25 June 2009, Curator: Catherine Hemelryk (GB)
“Art holds a privileged position in society where anything can happen. It could be argued that art has super-powers as it can conjure the impossible into being and create situations that may otherwise not have come to be. This project is a platform for presenting some feats of artistic practice, but also key to it is a space for participation, for visitors-artist nearby, composers, writers, the regular Joe, anyone-can come and make something happen and perhaps to inspire other magical moments.”
Referred to above statement, about exhibition The Intimate, The Infinity and The Impossible, is written by curator: Catherine Hemelryk. She was born in Rugby, Warwickshire and has been based in Vilnius since 2005. She graduated from the Royal College of Art MA Curating Contemporary Art in 2004 after BA (hons) Fine Art from Newcastle University. She curates the Info Lab - a resource area on the ground floor of the CAC - where she has instigated a series of artist interventions and discussion group. She has also edited and contributed to various publications such as 'The Black Box' a set of 5 books and 4 poster inserts produced for the IX Baltic Triennial, Vilnius, 2005; 'On Mobility', Amsterdam, 2006; 'Omagiya', Bucharest, 2006, and is currently editing a book with Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas.
Exhibition The Intimate, The Infinity and The Impossible is financed by city municipality and organized with help of Magacin and ProArtOrg. Considering that and statement by curator mentioned in first lines, we can see the way of positioning these art “event” (exhibition) in wide socio-political representation of “state of things” in transition Serbia. This is very important to empathize, because we are speaking about group thematic exhibition. Therefore, most of the works shown on exhibition are not produced by this occasion. In short, contextualization of these works is the key for understand this cultural event.
In following lines you will find the names of artist, title of each work. These artist and theirs works, especially these chosen by Catherine Hemelryk for this occasion, are already well-known so all kind of documentation is available on internet.

Belgrade, June 27 ( Serbia Today) - The Intimate, The Infinity and The Impossible is the title of the exhibition held in gallery Magacin , Kraljevica Marka 4, Belgrade, Serbia, 15 June - 25 June 2009, Curator: Catherine Hemelryk (GB)
“Art holds a privileged position in society where anything can happen. It could be argued that art has super-powers as it can conjure the impossible into being and create situations that may otherwise not have come to be. This project is a platform for presenting some feats of artistic practice, but also key to it is a space for participation, for visitors-artist nearby, composers, writers, the regular Joe, anyone-can come and make something happen and perhaps to inspire other magical moments.”
Referred to above statement, about exhibition The Intimate, The Infinity and The Impossible, is written by curator: Catherine Hemelryk. She was born in Rugby, Warwickshire and has been based in Vilnius since 2005. She graduated from the Royal College of Art MA Curating Contemporary Art in 2004 after BA (hons) Fine Art from Newcastle University. She curates the Info Lab - a resource area on the ground floor of the CAC - where she has instigated a series of artist interventions and discussion group. She has also edited and contributed to various publications such as 'The Black Box' a set of 5 books and 4 poster inserts produced for the IX Baltic Triennial, Vilnius, 2005; 'On Mobility', Amsterdam, 2006; 'Omagiya', Bucharest, 2006, and is currently editing a book with Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas.
Exhibition The Intimate, The Infinity and The Impossible is financed by city municipality and organized with help of Magacin and ProArtOrg. Considering that and statement by curator mentioned in first lines, we can see the way of positioning these art “event” (exhibition) in wide socio-political representation of “state of things” in transition Serbia. This is very important to empathize, because we are speaking about group thematic exhibition. Therefore, most of the works shown on exhibition are not produced by this occasion. In short, contextualization of these works is the key for understand this cultural event.
