Gamzigrad

By: Bojana Jankovic

Uzice, March 20, 2010 (Serbia Today) - In the vicinity of a town Zajecar, in the Eastern part of Serbia and South of the river Danube, as a part of the ancient Roman imperial palace Felix Romuliana, an archaeological site Gamzigrad is located. It represents the residence of the Roman Emperor Gaius Valerius Maximianus. Since June 29, 2007, Gamzigrad is under the protection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and officially one of the seven natural and cultural wonders of Serbia since October 18, 2008.

In mid-nineteenth century, Gamzigrad was rated as a very large and exceptional archaeological site, but its purpose was not yet specifically determined. The riddle of Gamzigrad was solved only in 1984, when in the southwestern part of the palace, in a building with mosaic floors and walls painted with frescoes, an archivolt is found made of sandstone on which the inscription FELIX ROMULIANA was carved. That label introduced Gamzigrad in the history entering the big door and placed it in the group of imperial constructions, in the category of monuments of Roman Castle architecture. This label enables mutual adjustment and supplementation of history and archeology. Relief decoration on archivolt, where the inscription was carved, denotes that the first word Felix has a purely religious and ideological meaning, expressing some kind of consecration and alludes to something that is sacred and eternal. The leaves of ivy, laurel wreath and peacocks as well as decorative elements that surround this label are symbols of consecration and apotheosis, as well as symbols of eternal life. Between 1985 and 1989 in the Eastern part of Gamzigrad, an area in front of a large temple was found and the East gate of the older and younger fortification. Parts of a colossal marble statue was found in front of the temple, which represent Jupiter with an eagle on his extended right hand, while in the ruins of the Eastern facade of the gate of that younger fortification, many architectural elements with relief performances were discovered. That is indicative that the whole Romuliana was built in honor of members of Jupiter, his family and their system of ruling the world. In addition to these ,on the portal of Romuliana’s main gate are presented scenes from afterlife and imperial apotheosis; and so the archivolts, consoles, pilasters and panels are abundant in vines, ivy, laurel branches, grape gathering, eagles and laurel wreathes adorned by peacocks. To the apotheosis allude the displayed sculptures of divinities and pictures of Dionysus,

Hercules and Asclepius on the mosaics discovered in the Imperial Palace next to a large temple. All the important checkpoints inside the city walls of Romuliana were explored archaeologically until 1990. Even the first researchers of Gamzigrad have noticed that the space outside the walls was covered with remains of various buildings from Roman times, especially on the Magura ridge that rises east of the main gate Romuliana, at a distance of about 1000 meters. Archaeological research has shown that the Magura is a specific holy hill, “Mons Sanctus”,that even in prehistoric times was a holy place of greatest respect and is the place where Romulus and Galerius were buried and ascended among the gods. Magura is a high, elongated reef built by marl, sandstone and volcanic rocks, and through its northern ridge led a main road for Romuliana. At the highest point of the ridge were discovered remnants of tetrapilon, a monumental gate with four entrances. That was a crossroad: the east-west direction from tetrapilon descended towards the main gate of Romuliana, and to the south changed slightly towards the top of Magura, where between 1989 and 1993, two giant tumulus and remains of two mausoleums were excavated.

Although they were destroyed long time ago and covered in a thick oak forest, religious monuments and tumuli silhouettes, even today are a point that can clearly be sees on the horizon, which means that once they have been far more visible. From the mausoleum’s square foundation on the North side, only a part remained with a grave in its center. A few stone blocks in the site and architectural elements found in the ruins, allowed to perform the reconstruction of the mausoleum. In the middle of a giant natural amphitheater Romuliana was built in the area which was inhabited since prehistoric times. During the excavation of the palace in its northern part, remains of settlements from the Bronze and Iron Age were found. Tombs with urns from the Early Iron Age were discovered at Magura, below the consecration monuments. From the moment the building of Romuliana began, all about it and around it became sacred, and every building is designed in order to convey a certain message or become a symbol. Felix Romuliana is one of the most important late Roman localities in Europe. Gamzigrad is included on the popular tourist offer “On the way of Roman Emperors”. Gamzigrad offers also comfortable accommodations and two kilometers away is a famous water spa with a source of thermal water.

By: Bojana Jankovic
Uzice, March 16, 2010 (Serbia Today) - Ethno- Tourism has been operating in Serbia for many years with great success. Serbian villages are known as ecological oasis free from pollutions of modern cities, the air clean and the food healthy.
Known by their hospitality and cordiality, the hosts will greet you with a smile, attentiveness and closeness. Yet, there are differences in details in various parts of Serbia, because the ethno-tourist includes the excursions through the surrounding areas, natural attractions, cultural-historical sites, traditional folklore manifestations, sports and recreational activities in nature. If you choose Vojvodina village for your retreat, you will realize that many years ago, the salashes (farms) have switched from agriculture to tourism. Secluded from the rest of the world, they fill you with a charm of past times. Some of the salashes exist over 200 years, and in time they became museums of flatland’s way of life. You can find there almost all the objects and tools that their inhabitants used in the field, household or yard.
In the Eastern part of Vojvodina, in Banat, there is an ethno village Tiganjica, 10 km away from the city Zrenjanin. With an idea to present the life in Banat in an imaginative way, at the entrance to this village is situated a natural reservation preserve called Carska bara (King’s pond). A special attraction in Tiganjica is a mini zoo with roosters, pawns, does and ducks. For lovers of active vacation, there are available horses for riding, and refreshment can be found at the bathing area next to the Zabalj bridge, where also a camp site has been open. The village homesteads in the vicinity of towns Donji Milanovac, Kladovo, Golubac, Majdanpek and Negotin, known by their ethno-tourist offers, will take care that your stay is not just comfortable but also interesting. The trumpet and flute are the instruments from these areas and traditional instruments when the famous ” kolo” is played. The famous “Sumadian Tea” (cooked brandy) will warm you up, while you listen to the story-tellers and their stories of Serbian heroes and Dukes, famous battles and big victories. The villages of Central Serbia nurture a tradition of good health, clean air, pure water and medical benefits of nature. At the North-West part of municipality of Arandjelovac, there is a village Latkovac. With its long and interesting history it spreads a magic atmosphere around itself, culminating in remarkable quality wines.
A special event is wine tasting, when it is accompanied with story-telling about Fairies and Slavic Gods. In this village tourists can participate in old Serbian Crafts or agricultural works. Even though the historic and cultural tradition is very rich, the nature is still intact and pure. There is a souvenir store in this village, which proceeds go to the mentally challenged persons in Aleksandrovac.
The villages in the Western parts of Serbia were actually the first ones , which started to accommodate the tourists in their own houses. Their houses are mainly built out of wood, on stone foundation. The architecture is very pleasant and impressive, while the interior is filled with warmth. Here people greet each other by “All the Best”, which they seriously wish you, and will show you by their traditional meals that will leave you breathless: corn bread from integral flour, mushrooms, pies with homemade filo-dough and domestic cheese, vegetable soups, nettle, djuvech and stuffed peppers, corn meal. Between the mountains Zlatibor and Tara, a film director Emir Kusturica has built an ethno village called Drvengrad on Mecavik, in Mokra Gora. At one end it has a small wooden entrance, at the other end a small wooden church dedicated to Saint Sava. The central village square is made of a big wooden square. Authentic wooden houses are raised on stone foundations. Drvengrad has a library, art gallery, movie theater, pastry shop, traditional restaurant, store selling handicraft works of villagers.

This house consists of two huts and a mobile house with a bed, so the shepherd could be next to his herd during summer and winter. Many workshops are organized during the year, as well as numerous art exhibitions. Sirogojno is famous worldwide for its handmade sweaters, well known in Paris, Rome, Vienna, but also in the Far East. Sirogojno is surrounded by mountainous range, ideal for winter and summer vacations, and in vicinity are Stopica cave, and spa Vapa. Divcibare, March 06, 2010. (Serbia Today) - Positioned in a central part of a mountain range Maljen, 38 kilometers South-East of the town Valjevo, Divcibare is a well known mountain, airial and touristic place that attracts over two million citizens yearly.
Black river, Zabalci, Calacki potok and Devil’s whirlpool are strict nature conservation places at the sea level of 980 meters. Because of its good geographic position and comfortable gentle climate, air masses from the Mediterranean sea combine with the air masses from the Caucassus mountains, Panonian valley, and meet over Divcibare. That explaines the presence of iodine in the air.
Thanks to that climate, Divcibare was proclaimed a climatic healing center in 1963. The river Manastirica that flows through this mountain represents a special curiosity because of its waterfall called Skakalo, which thanks to its hight of about 20 meters makes incredible shapes.
Besides that, with a special pleasure Divcibare presents its soft meadows, and coniferous and deciduous forests. If you are looking for a sense of freedom, relaxation, happiness- you will find them with a help of a cable railway which will lead you to the tops „Crni Vrh“ and „Maljen“.

She knew how to use Jankovic’s de-concentration and after a soft and balanced start she took over with aggressive game and soon after she won.
High intensity and frequency of the Tennis tournaments during the professional season sometimes come back to hunt the best of players. It seems to be the case with Jelena Jankovic this year.
